Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble (SYTE) premieres their new collaborative performance entitled Runaway Moon, inspired by a story poignantly illustrated in Japanese sumie ink painting by featured artist and storybook author Minette Mangahas. SYTE artists Naoko Amemiya, Ellen Bepp, Jimi Nakagawa and Kallan Nishimoto will be joined on stage by guest violinist, cellist, and movement artist Jeannie Mckenzie.
Beautiful melodies, mesmerizing visuals, lyrical movement and the strong, dramatic beat of taiko drums come together in this exciting cross-disciplinary performance. Based on Mangahas’ story, Runaway Moon showcases Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble's inventive explorations at the intersection of music, theater, dance, and taiko. This simple tale of a moon seemingly chasing a horse through a span of one night from dusk to dawn mirrors our current fears and hopes in post-911 America. Friday, Saturday: NOVEMBER 17 – 18 at 8:00 PM Sunday: NOVEMBER 19 at 7:30 PM
SomArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan Street, SF

Kelvin Underwood (formerly of Ondekoza) and On Ensemble cordially invite you to "DRUM FUND", a very special concert event. This is one of Kelvin's first efforts to raise funds for his Taiko school which will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Drum Fund is scheduled for Saturday, October 14th, 2006 and a groundbreaking performance by "ON ENSEMBLE" will highlight the evening of the fundraiser event. With powerful rhythms of ensemble Taiko music at its foundation, On Ensemble explores the depths of Taiko's sonic possibilities and combines this with contemporary Western and Eastern sounds such as turntable, Tuvan throat singing, drumset and a wide variety of exotic percussion into unique and provocative performances.
This event will take place at the Capoeira Arts Cafe located in downtown Berkeley, CA at 2026 Addison St. Doors open at 7PM and admission is $10.00 at the door. It's an all ages event and it's wheelchair accessible. For more information call (510) 684-7168 and visit KELVINUNDERWOOD.COM or ONENSEMBLE.ORG. |
