Chappa/Kane

Chappa (cymbols) and Atarigane (hand gongs) have a bright ringing sound that cut through the roar of the big drums.

Chappa (sometimes called tebyoushi) are loud, brash and you can produce a lively array of sounds with them, which makes them suitable for flashy solo performances. They are available in a range of sizes from #4 (12cm in diameter) to #6 (18cm). The smaller chappa have a higher pitch and are better suited for keeping time. Larger chappa (such as #5.5 or #6) are lower, a touch more subdued, and have a broader range of sounds which make them suitable for soloing.

Atarigane (sometimes called chan-chiki) are small hand gongs struck with mallets called shumoku. Atarigane have a fantastic, hard-edged bell-like sound. They are lound and great for timekeeping, although some players do amazing solos with them as well. Typically available in size from #4 (12cm) to #6 (18cm). Larger sizes available by special order.
